Why do we want to make fuel prices more visible?

Following the introduction of road side displays at Jersey's forecourts in 2012, it was calculated that on average, road fuel prices in the next 12 months fell by 3p/4p a litre. This was just because motorists were better informed about which garages offered the cheapest fuel. As a result, with motorists shopping around more for their fuel, the forecourts competed more on price in an attempt to win more sales.

Our aim is to not only make road fuel prices in Jersey more transparent, but heating oil prices and gas and electricity tariffs too. If prices are more transparent for heating oil for example, home owners can quickly decide which of the three heating oil suppliers offer the best deals. The same applies to shopping for coal. With electricity and gas however, as there is only one supplier of each, we do not enjoy the same choices as perhaps UK consumers. However, by gaining a better understanding of the tariffs on offer and your own particular consumption patterns, you may be able to make more informed decisions as to whether you're on the right tariff, or whether switching to another energy type might be a sensible option for you.

How it works?

Our aim is to improve consumers awareness of fuel prices by offering greater visibility of prices and this will be done via www.JerseyFuelWatch.com. Originally designed to follow just road fuel prices, we have now added the prices of home heating oil, electricity, gas and coal. Our aim is to help you better understand how much your road and household fuel is costing and hopefully this will enable you to make more informed decisions when it comes to deciding what type of fuel is best for you and how you use it.

The Jersey Consumer Council will update the prices of heating oil and coal on at least a weekly basis. Our aim is to create total price visibility online.  However, in order to keep road fuel prices up-to-date, we need your help.

Motorists - we need your help!

By signing up and submitting price information you see, you're helping all Jersey motorists to get better value in future. You can submit price information via the home page of this website on your computer, web-enabled phone or other mobile device. The site has been built to work perfectly on mobiles. (Please observe fuel forecourt rules on mobile phone use!)

It's super simple - just three bits of information each time, and the website is pre-loaded with all the fuel stations in Jersey so you can choose yours from the list.

You won't even have to drive past a fuel station to see its prices - before you even go anywhere, you'll be able to find them here.

Using price information submitted by you the public, we hope to provide real time price information that will drive better value for Jersey motorists.

We're collating information that's already in the public domain, and making it as visible as possible online.

What's in the price per litre?

The price of petrol and diesel also includes duty at 45.47ppl (2017 rate) and 47.29ppl (super unleaded) as well as GST of 5%.

So for example, if the forecourt price of unleaded petrol is £1.05 per litre, the GST element is 5p and the duty is 45.47p, resulting in the retail price of the fuel to be 54.53p per litre.

For heating oil, if the price is 50p per litre, GST is 2.4p and therefore the price of the product is 47.6p per litre.

What price does the website show?

The prices shown are the most recent price at the pump, for each fuel type, for each fuel station. Each fuel station is only shown once.

Please only submit the price shown at the pump! It's down to fuel stations to promote their own loyalty and voucher schemes.

JerseyFuelWatch.com is all about the price at the pump.

Fuel station owners

We'd love it if you'd submit your own prices - best way to keep them current. Please feel free to sign up and submit as often as your prices change.

Spurious price information

We can't stop people from deliberately submitting incorrect price information. If you see something that's obviously mischievous or deceptive, please let us know by clicking the "Report bad information" link below. We will remove anything we believe is deliberately deceptive.

Thank you

Thank you for your help. Together we can help make our energy prices more visible to you the consumer.
